Setting up a maintenance program

No single maintenance program applies to all operations. There are simply too many variables. Factors such as the age and type of equipment, percentage of units under warranty, and distances traveled make it essential to create fleet specific programs.

Adhering to the service recommendations outlined in each major OEM’s PM checklist is a safe foundation for any program. Another source of help is government guidelines. The DOT for years has influenced the maintenance practices and recordkeeping procedures of those involved in interstate trucking. Rules and guidelines are covered in a manual called Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Every truck operation may or may not be governed by these regulations. However, whether or not compliance is mandatory, the guidelines and requirements can be used as a basis for a planned, controlled maintenance program on most types of equipment.
