Due to resistance in the battery cables, the voltage output by the alternator drops by the time it arrives at the battery. This voltage drop can be as much as 0.5 volt. When an alternator is equipped with remote sensing a second sensing wire reads actual voltage at the battery pack. This second wire signals the alternator to compensate for any voltage drop. The result is that battery charge times are reduced by half.
