When fleet equipment management is ceded to CBM software the role of the maintenance manager is reduced into determining what level of risk should be undertaken. Using the example of brake linings cited earlier, wheel-off brake inspections would not be undertaken on PM routines. The Y factor on the algorithm would be determined by the CBM software along with a human decision on what level of risk should be undertaken. In addition, once the Y factor life is achieved, the brake linings would be changed, perhaps eliminating the labor of three PM inspections.
