Files are designed to remove small amounts of metal, for smoothing, or sharpening surfaces. They are classified as single cut, double cut, fine, and coarse. These are easily identified by the file tooth pattern. The abrasive teeth on a file cut in only one direction—on the forward stroke. Choose a file that is appropriate for the job at hand. Use a coarse cut file on soft material such as aluminum to prevent clogging.
