Ether starting systems

Diesel fuel will not ignite in an engine until it reaches its ignition temperature—typically about 550°F (300°C). Using ether-based starting fluid aids helps start diesel engines because ether ignites at about 350°F and pilots the ignition of diesel fuel in the cylinder. Typically, starting fluid systems vary from the handheld aerosol can (total operator control) to “automatic” and electronic systems that actuate with the engine cranking (no operator control).
